Rep. Cisneros Statement on President’s Executive Orders

January 20, 2025

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr. released the following statement after President Trump signed Executive Orders purported to be policy, but in fact target immigrants, undermine Constitutional rights, provoke political culture war issues, and do nothing to benefit the American people:

“The overwhelming majority of the President’s Executive Orders focus more on attacking Americans rather than improving their lives. President Trump picked up right where he left off with his racist and xenophobic attacks against immigrant communities. Ending birthright citizenship and humanitarian pathways to citizenship for refugees not only violates the 14th Amendment, but is also cruel and does nothing to actually address border security, nor does it meaningfully reform our immigration system.  Moreover, orders to dismantle Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives demonstrate the President’s obsession with making America appear how he wants it to look while only benefiting those he deems worthy.

“There are countless other Executive Orders that seek nothing more than to inflame partisan issues and further divide Americans. Ultimately, there is one common theme today, a guiding principle of the Trump Presidency, the prioritization of petty grievances and attacks on our most vulnerable. None of the President’s Executive Orders take concrete action to lower housing costs, make groceries more affordable, or meaningfully improve the daily lives of hard-working Americans. Sadly, this is what was expected. I urge the President to stop putting the interests of wealthy extremists like Elon Musk over the interests of the American people.”

Rep. Cisneros is a Navy veteran, the former Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, and previously served in the 116th Congress. He serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Committee on Small Business. He is a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Congressional Labor Caucus, New Democrat Coalition, the bipartisan For Country Caucus, and Reproductive Freedom Caucus. California’s 31st District encompasses parts of eastern Los Angeles County and the San Gabriel Valley, including West Covina, El Monte, and Baldwin Park.
