Rep. Cisneros Statement on Governor Newsom's Statewide Redistricting Proposal

Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Gil Cisneros released the following statement:

“I applaud Governor Newsom's announcement today. With the support of the state legislature, California voters will have the chance to push back against President Trump's unprecedented power grab and defend our democracy. The Governor's proposal does not eliminate the Redistricting Commission. It will be up and running after the next census in 2030.  We cannot stand by while red states like Texas try to steal seats away from Democratic members of Congress by dummymandering their districts. Unlike in states where maps are drawn behind closed doors, Californians will see these maps and vote directly on them. The future of our democracy rests with the voters, and I encourage every Californian to make their voice heard.”

Rep. Cisneros is a Navy veteran and the former Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness. He currently serves on the House Armed Services Committee’s Intelligence and Special Operations and Military Personnel Subcommittees. He also serves as the Chair of the New Dem National Security Working Group.
