Rep. Cisneros Rejects Republican Cuts to Healthcare, Food Assistance, Deplores Republicans Big Ugly Unpopular Bill

July 3, 2025

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr. (CA-31) released the following statement and voted no on House Republicans’ “One Big Ugly” Bill:

“Today, we voted once again on a deeply flawed piece of legislation to kick people off their healthcare and steal nutrition assistance from millions more. This bill is bad for America, our health, and our future. I stood with all House Democrats to vote no on this big, ugly, harmful, and wasteful bill,” said Rep. Cisneros.

“Tuesday, I offered five amendments during the Rules committee markup to encourage my Republican colleagues to improve childcare, fund urban hospitals, hold DOGE accountable within the DoD, and say what we are all thinking about the bill: nobody wants this. Republicans refused to entertain any of them,” Rep. Cisneros continued “Instead of passing legislation that improves the lives of the people they serve, Republicans continue to push their unpopular and harmful agenda. The Republicans voted to let seniors and children go hungry, add billions of dollars to the national debt, and steal healthcare from millions in the largest Medicaid cut in history. I am disgusted to see the livelihood of our people so callously dismissed, and I will continue to fight to protect the health and safety of all Americans.”

Rep. Cisneros proposed five amendments to the bill including:

  • Expanding eligibility for the employer-provided childcare tax credit.
  • Providing funding for urban hospitals.
  • Requiring the Secretary of Defense to provide activities carried out in coordination or consultation with DOGE to Congress.
  • Increasing funds for child development center employee pay and facility maintenance.
  • Revising the short title of the bill to the “Nobody Wants This Act.”

Rep. Cisneros is a Navy veteran and the former Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness. He currently serves on the House Armed Services Committee’s Intelligence and Special Operations and Military Personnel Subcommittees. He also serves as the Chair of the New Dem National Security Working Group.
