Rep. Cisneros Rejects Republican Cuts To Health Care, Food Assistance

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr. (CA-31) released the following statement and voted no on House Republicans’ “One Big Billionaire Bailout” Bill:

“In the middle of the night, Republicans voted to steal healthcare coverage, slash SNAP benefits, and raise costs for working families—all to benefit their billionaire wage thiefs ,” said Rep. Cisneros. “I joined House Democrats to vehemently oppose the bill and protect American families from these devastating cuts.”

“Last night, I offered four amendments and waited over 12 hours to give my testimony and encourage my Republican colleagues to improve childcare, hold DOGE accountable, and call out the bill for what it is: a tax break for the ultra wealthy,” Rep. Cisneros continued “These aren’t partisan issues—Democrats and Republicans alike want a safer, more affordable future. Still, they refused to entertain Democrats attempts to work together and pass legislation that helps people. Instead, they pushed forward with an unpopular and unjust bill that takes money from hardworking families and deposits it right in the bank account of robber barons. I’m outraged to see the livelihood of our people so callously dismissed. I remain committed to using every tool at my disposal to stop this devastating scheme from ever becoming law.”

Rep. Cisneros proposed four amendments to the bill including:

  • Expanding eligibility for the employer-provided child care tax credit.
  • Requiring the Secretary of Defense to provide activities carried out in coordination or consultation with the United States DOGE Service to Congress.
  • Increasing funds for child development center employee pay and facility maintenance.
  • Revising the short title of the bill to “One Big Billionaire Bailout Act."

Rep. Cisneros is a Navy veteran and the former Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness. He currently serves on the House Armed Services Committee’s Intelligence and Special Operations and Military Personnel Subcommittees. He also serves as the Chair of the New Dem National Security Working Group.
