Press Release

FULLERTON, CA - This past week, Representative Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr. (CA-39) visited and spent Christmas with U.S. troops in the Middle East and Italy as part of a bipartisan Congressional Delegation (CODEL). The CODEL departed the U.S. on Sunday, December 22 and returned today, December 27. The CODEL visited U.S. Army Installation Camp Arifjan in Kuwait, United State Naval Forces Central Command in Bahrain, Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, and Naval Air Station Sigonella in Italy. Rep. Cisneros spent time with servicemembers from California’s 39th District and across the country, and met with military and diplomatic leaders to discuss U.S. operations and dynamics in the region.

“When I was in the Navy over 20 years ago, I was forward deployed and spent the holidays away from family and friends,” said Rep. Cisneros. “I remember what that time was like for me, and it’s why I chose to spend this Christmas visiting our courageous troops in the Middle East. While I know our servicemembers would have liked to have spent Christmas with loved ones, at a minimum, I hoped a visit from members of Congress would let them know that people are thinking about them back home.

“On my trip, I met with servicemembers from the 39th District and across the country, as well as military and diplomatic leaders. I was grateful to meet several constituents, some friends and some who I  met for the first time, and all were in good spirits despite being away from home. Whether it was their first or seventh time deployed, all of them understood the importance of their mission and duty. It was my honor to visit our men and women in uniform overseas, serve and share meals with them, and thank them for their unwavering service and sacrifice. Our servicemembers never stop fighting for our country, and our country should never stop fighting for them.”

The other Representatives on the CODEL with Rep. Cisneros included:

  • Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI-01), House Committee on Foreign Affairs
  • Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY-01), House Committee on Foreign Affairs
