Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C.Today, Congressman Gil Cisneros (CA-39) and his guest Miriam Tellez, a DACA recipient, attended the State of the Union Address. Following the President’s Address, Congressman Cisneros issued the following statement:

“Today the President continued to sow fear and falsehoods instead of unifying our country and moving forward with this new Congress. He charged ahead with his divisive and hateful rhetoric, specifically aimed at our most vulnerable and immigrant communities. The President has lost sight of the fact that the people he continues to try and target are our friends and neighbors, teachers and service members, valued contributors to our economy, and integral to our American fabric.

“While the President tried to promote his commitment to the American people, his actions speak louder than words. He says he supports affordable healthcare, but has done nothing to stop the Texas lawsuit that would undermine the Affordable Care Act and protections for those with pre-existing conditions. He says he has strengthened our economy, but recklessly shut down the government, holding thousands of government worker paychecks hostage and costing our economy over $11 billion. And he says he wants to welcome immigrants, but enforced inhumane policies that ripped children away from their families, some still separated to this day.

“I will continue to look for opportunities to work with this administration, especially on behalf of our veterans and for much needed infrastructure investments for our district. However, I will never lose sight of my district’s priorities and will always represent the values of the people of the 39th. I will work to hold the President accountable and defend our diverse communities.”
