Rep. Cisneros Statement on SCOTUS “Remain in Mexico” Ruling

Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Representative Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr. (CA-39) released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s decision to allow President Trump to temporarily enforce his “Remain in Mexico” policy while the case proceeds. Last month, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals blocked the President’s policy.

“People have the right to seek asylum in the United States. The dangerous ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy does nothing to help migrants fleeing from violence, persecution, and war, and leaves families vulnerable to danger, kidnapping, and now, the coronavirus. It forces people to stay in a country that is not their own without any protection in violent areas. Last August, I saw first-hand the inhumane treatment and living conditions asylum seekers are experiencing at migrant detention centers and crowded shelters on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. The United States Supreme Court should follow the Ninth Circuit Court and block this illegal and cruel policy.

“We need real, comprehensive immigration reform that invests in immigration judges and courts that help process these claims. The United States stands as a beacon of hope, but the Administration’s backward policy is diminishing our country’s values. Democrats and Republicans need to come to the table and work together to reform our immigration system.”

In August 2019, Rep. Cisneros and a delegation of over 20 Members of Congress conducted an oversight visit at migrant detention centers and shelters on both sides of the border.
