WASHINGTON, DC –  Today, Representative Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr. (CA-39) released the following statement after President Putin and President Erdogan agreed to jointly take control over formerly Kurdish-held territory in Northern Syria.

“Following the President’s reckless decision to abandon our Kurdish allies, he has left a void in the Middle East region and allowed Russia and President Putin to take advantage,” said Rep. Cisneros. “Republicans and Democrats agree that the war against ISIS is not over and the President’s careless foreign policy has put our national security and international interests at risk. When I served in the United States Navy, we worked with and supported our allies to uphold the values we share. By turning our backs on our Kurdish partners, this President and his Administration have emboldened our adversaries, endangered our troops on the ground, put the Kurdish people at risk, undermined our international standing, and made the region more volatile.”

Rep. Cisneros is a Navy veteran and serves on the House Armed Services Committee. Last week, Rep. Cisneros joined a bipartisan majority of the House in supporting and voting for a resolution to oppose the President’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Northern Syria. The resolution passed 354-60. Rep. Cisneros also spoke with Phillip Mena about the President’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Northern Syria and the consequences it has had in the region.
