Rep. Cisneros Statement on the President’s FY20 Budget Request
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr. (CA-39) released the following statement in response to the President’s budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2020.
“The President’s budget proposal fails to produce a responsible vision for our country and does not represent our country’s values. Instead, it undermines the Affordable Care Act and our health care system, weakens our national security, and leaves struggling families behind,” said Rep. Cisneros.
“The President’s budget proposes to cut Medicare and Medicaid by over a trillion dollars over the next decade, upending programs he vowed to protect. It would also undercut services to working class families and children, including reducing the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and limiting Earned Income and Child Tax credits.
“He also seeks $8.6 billion to fund construction of an unnecessary and ineffective border wall, a proposal that has been flatly rejected by the American people following his partisan and political government shutdown. In addition, the budget only offers $3.6 billion of the $9 billion that the Department of Defense needs to pay back deferred military construction projects because of the President’s fake emergency declaration.
“Finally, as a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I have deep concerns with the President’s incredibly short-sighted proposal to cut funding for Department of State and International Assistance programs by 23.3%. As confirmed by the Commanders for US Central Command and Africa Command in testimony to me before the Committee just last week these programs are “absolutely essential” to keeping Americans safe by combatting threats before they reach our shores and protecting our values overseas. Adopting the President’s proposed cuts would only serve to enable the drivers of future instability, insurgency, and extremism, setting ourselves up to face another generation of regional conflicts.
“This budget is a document riddled with misguided principles, fiscally unsustainable proposals, and shortsighted cuts to important programs. Congress has a duty to make smart fiscal choices that will safeguard America’s future and I will continue to advocate the priorities and people of the 39th District.”
