Rep. Cisneros Statement on the Passage of H.R. 1, the For the People Act

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr. (CA-39) released the following statement on the passage of H.R. 1, the For the People Act of 2019. This legislation is House Democrats’ transformative set of government reforms that will end the dominance of big money in American politics, ensure secure elections, and put the American people – not special interests – first.

“Today I voted in support of an ambitious and overdue reform package that will begin to put an end to dark money pervading politics, restore accountability and transparency, and return our government to the people.” said Rep. Cisneros.

“In addition, this bill addresses national security threats against our election infrastructure by helping states protect our election systems from cyber-attacks, hacking, and data-breaches and provides critical funding to modernize our election systems and improve coordination on responding to cyber threats. 

“We can make sure that every American has equal opportunity to head to the ballot box and have their voice heard. I will continue to work to restore faith in government and ensure our democracy works for the residents of California’s 39th District. I also urge the Senate Majority Leader to observe the will of the people, stop playing partisan politics, and have the Senate take up a vote on this transformative piece of legislation.”

Rep. Cisneros is committed to improving government ethics and ensuring our elections are protected. He is a cosponsor of H.R. 4, the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2019, which would seek commonsense reforms to our election system. He is also a cosponsor of legislation to offer a Constitutional Amendment to overturn Citizens United.
