Rep. Cisneros Statement on H.R. 2722, the Securing America’s Federal Elections (SAFE) Act of 2019
WASHINGTON D.C. – This week, Congressman Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr. (CA-39) released the following statement on the passage of H.R. 2722 , the Securing America’s Federal Elections (SAFE) Act of 2019.
“More than two years since the U.S. intelligence community assessed that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an influence campaign to undermine our U.S. democratic process, the SAFE Act is a long-overdue response to safeguard U.S. elections from foreign interference and protect our national security,” said Rep. Cisneros. “It is our duty to stand up for our democracy and harden our democratic institutions from future foreign interference. The SAFE Act will provide states with the resources, training, and support they need to secure our elections.”
The SAFE Act authorizes $1.3 billion for election security grants to states to improve election security through the 2026 election cycle, increases funding for the Election Assistance Commission (EAC), requires states to conduct post-election risk-limiting audits to ensure election integrity, sets strict cybersecurity standards for both election technology vendors and for voting systems, and requires voting machines to be manufactured in the United States.
Rep. Cisneros is a Navy veteran and member of the House Armed Services Committee and House Committee on Veterans Affairs.
