Rep. Cisneros Statement on Census Day

April 1, 2020
Press Release

FULLERTON, CA - Today, Representative Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr. (CA-39) issued the following statement regarding Census Day. For the first time ever, the census can be completed online by going here. The deadline to respond to the U.S. Census was extended to August 14 as a result of COVID-19.

“Amid the coronavirus crisis, we cannot forget about the importance of filling out the census. This only happens once every ten years, and we need to get a fair and accurate count,” said Rep Cisneros. “For every person we miss in the census, our district will lose $2,000 in federal funding. From hospitals, schools, small businesses, police stations, and fire departments, the census is critical to ensure California’s 39th District gets the resources and funding we need. I encourage everyone to fill out the census and take part in shaping the future of our community.”

Rep. Cisneros filled out the census last week on March 26.

On January 17, Rep. Cisneros hosted a town hall with California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to talk about the 2020 Census and Vote Centers.

On February 20, Rep. Cisneros condemned a census scam targeted at California’s 39th District.

On March 9, Rep. Cisneros launched 2020 Census videos, including ones subtitled in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Korean.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, April 1st is Census Day because it’s a key reference date for the 2020 Census—not a deadline. The Census Bureau uses this day to determine who is counted and where in the 2020 Census. When you respond, you tell the Census Bureau where you live as of April 1, 2020 and include everyone who usually lives and sleeps in your home. You can respond before or after that date. We encourage you to respond as soon as you can.
