The annual Open Enrollment period for both Medicare and Covered California is here!

The Open Enrollment period occurs annually to give beneficiaries the chance to reevaluate their current healthcare coverage and determine whether it is still the best plan for you and your family. The benefits your plan provides may be changing for next year so be sure to carefully review any notices from your plan. Additionally, each year brings new health coverage options that may have better coverage at lower costs.  

 

Now is the time to compare the plans available, and shopping around could mean extra savings for you and your family!

 

MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT: OCTOBER 15, 2019-DECEMBER 7, 2019

If you are 65 or older, you most likely qualify for Medicare coverage. The Medicare Open Enrollment period gives Medicare beneficiaries the opportunity to reevaluate your current healthcare coverage. You also have the chance to switch to a new plan that fits all of your healthcare needs.  For instance:

 

  • You may wish to switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage, or vice versa, after examining coverage benefits;

  • You may wish to switch from one Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D prescription drug plan to another after comparing pricing; or

  • If you have have yet to enroll in a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan, you may wish to enroll now.

 

There are a number of resources available to help you and your family find the best coverage that meets your unique healthcare needs:

  • Visit the newly updated Medicare Plan Finder to learn about and compare coverage options and shop for health and drug plans. If you need help navigating the new site, please watch the official overview of the site for a quick tutorial on youtube.

  • Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) for assistance; assistance is available 24 hours a day, including weekends. If you need help in a language other than English or Spanish, let the customer service representative know the language. 

  • Get free in person health insurance counseling through the California Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP).  Find out more about these services and where your closest office is online - or by phone at 1-800-434-0222.

COVERED CA OPEN ENROLLMENT: OCTOBER 15, 2019 - JANUARY 15, 2020

Covered California is the only insurance marketplace in California where eligible individuals can receive financial assistance to help pay for their health insurance. Covered California Open Enrollment will run from now through January 15, 2020.  But if you want to ensure your coverage starts January 1, 2020, be sure to apply by December 15, 2019 to avoid a delay!

This year, Covered California is offering additional subsidies to qualifying individuals and families to reduce premium costs. Specifically, individuals earning up to $74,940, couples earning up to $101,460, and families of four earning up to $154,500 are now eligible for premium assistance if you purchase a plan through the marketplace. This means that approximately 229,000 more Californians are newly eligible to receive subsidies to bring down the cost of their monthly premiums. Additionally, Covered California indicates that “customers who shop around when enrollment for 2020 plans opens on October 15 could reduce their premiums by as much as 16.5%.”

  • Call Covered California’s Service Center at (800) 300-1506.  To avoid long hold times, you can have a certified enroller contact you through the Help on Demand feature.
